Hej Denmark :D
Hej Denmark :)
In case we didn’t meet yet:
hej my name is Tabea. A 19-year-old from the beautiful mountainside of Austria. Important things you might want to know about me: I love music, art, coffee, cats, blue and adventures :)
I arrived in the middle of September from Austria to be one of the two new volunteers at Kulturfabrikken and to get to Nykobing Falster I had a long travel …
It took me four trains and two days to travel into a new chapter in my life. The week before arriving in Denmark was filled with different emotions and it was honestly one of the most chaotic times in my life so far. I felt happy, exited, sad and nervous at the same time, because I was ready for something new, but for me it was also the first time to move out of my parent’s house and leave the places and people I am used to behind. But even though I knew that I would miss my friends and family, my stomach told me that it was the right thing to do, when I watched the beautiful landscape of Austria out of the train window, leaving the mountains behind me, who make me feel home.
After a long travel I felt so welcome and safe, when I met Guna and Mette at the train station in Nykobing Falster. When we got to our new apartment I also met my new roommate Leyla for the first time and I would say, after living together for some weeks, we make a pretty good team. We were both really surprised how welcoming and open everyone treated us. Meeting the rest of the team at Kulturfabrikken gave me the same feeling and I am really looking forward to working with all these wonderful people :D
There are two main things, that I will probably need some time to get used to. One is the grocery shopping, but other than you might think, it is not about the products or taking care of the task, no. It’s about the prices. Or more specific, the Danish crowns. In Austria we pay with Euro and one Euro equals about seven crowns. For your understanding, I was doing okay in the math classes in school, but one think I always struggled with was mental arithmetic. I guess I either need to practice it or always go grocery shopping with a calculator.
The other think I really struggle with is the rules when it comes to riding the bike, especially taking a left turn with the bike. I don’t have a driver’s license, so I am used to riding the bike, because I did it almost every day in Austria, but I guess you guys here don’t make “short cuts” and always take the extra mile while riding the bike. I hope I don’t get into a car crush, because I will need some time, to really understand how it works, but I am sure, that I will manage to do it right.
The time in Denmark flies by and there is so much more to discover. Working at Kulturfabrikken with my new teammates is a lot of fun and I like especially, that everyday something new is waiting for me. My currently tasks are making coffee, being part in different meetings, doing the laundry, being part in different workshops and helping my colleagues, if they need my help. After the first two weeks Leyla and I got the opportunity to be part of the “On-arrival-training” in Ollerup. This training is part of the ESC project (European Solidarity Corps) and a fantastic way to get in touch with other volunteers in Denmark. I really enjoyed this week and meet a lot of interesting and wonderful people <3
I am positive, that I will have a great time here in Nykobing Falster and hope to meet more new people (and hopefully friends), find new hobbies and places to spend my time and collect memories that hopefully last my whole life.
Tak for reading my first blog and being part of my small adventure :)
